Multifunction printer (sometimes abbreviated as MFP) is a general device that can print, fax, copy and scan. Multifunction printers are usually sold to small business owners and home offices as a single integrated device, which can replace several large personal devices. Multi function printers are also called Mopier or All-in-One (AIO).
The first multi-function printer was launched in early 1990s. Based on inkjet technology, the device is expensive and relatively unreliable, and produces mediocre quality prints. Since then, with HP, Canon, Lexmark, Xerox and brothers and other major manufacturers entering the market, prices have declined and quality has improved.
Multifunctional printer for ordinary consumers may be based on inkjet technology. Although the printing speed is slow, these devices can provide high quality color output. Some devices now have media reader slot, allowing users to insert flash cards from digital cameras. This allows printing digital photos without computers. The latest model may also have a standard port called PictBridge. PictBridge allows users to connect any digital camera directly to the printer and bypass the home computer.
